fiddleheads
In springtime ferns sprout from the forest floor. The sprouts are called fiddleheads. Wisconsin’s woods can be blanketed with these little creatures which are among the first plants to emerge after the snow melt. They grow quickly, often transcending from a bump on the leafy ground to full plant in a day or two. I’m drawn to make portraits of fiddleheads and see a reflection of humanity in their struggle as the tight, little packages unfold and fight their way toward the warming light of spring.
